Cashew testa skin, also known as cashew husk, cashew nut husk, cashew skin, or cashew nut husk skin, is the outer layer that is removed during the processing of cashew nuts. It is a rich source of fat and protein and can be used for a variety of purposes such as animal feed, tanning, fuel burning, fertilizer, and compost making.

Cashew Husk Peeling Process

The peeling process of the cashew husk, also known as the silk-shell peeling process, takes place after the hard shell of the cashew nut has been removed. The cashew kernels, which are still covered by the silk cover, are dried at high temperatures. During the drying process, the silk cover separates slightly from the kernel, making it easier to peel. The silk is then removed from the cashew nut using a knife, and the layer of rice husks that remains is known as cashew silk.

Uses of Cashew Husk

Cashew testa skin has several uses, including tanning, as pigments, animal feed, and as a source of tannins. Cashew silk shells are in high demand by the tanning industry, where they are used to extract tannins, which are astringent polyphenols that bind to collagen proteins in the skin. This process makes the leather less absorbent and less susceptible to bacteria and mold attacks, while also making it softer. The use of cashew husk in this way has added value to the cashew production and processing industry in Vietnam.
